🚧 New I-80 Lanes Open Between Richards Street and U.S. 30
Driving the news
Drivers on Interstate 80 in Joliet are now using newly opened travel lanes between Richards Street and U.S. 30, marking one of the first major milestones in Illinois' $1.3 billion I-80 modernization project.
Details
A new third eastbound lane has opened, with westbound expansion expected to follow as construction progresses.
The newly completed section provides about four miles of three-lane travel in each direction once both sides are fully opened.
The expansion is part of the larger 16-mile reconstruction project stretching from Ridge Road to U.S. 30.
Construction continues throughout the corridor with periodic lane shifts and overnight closures.
Why it matters
I-80 is one of the busiest freight and commuter routes in the Midwest.
These new lanes are expected to ease congestion, improve safety, and support continued growth across Will County.
The big picture
The lane opening is the first visible capacity improvement delivered under the state's broader I-80 overhaul, with additional bridges, interchanges, and roadway upgrades still scheduled over the next few years.
Between the lines
While motorists are beginning to benefit from the new lanes, the project remains far from finished.
Drivers should continue to expect construction activity and occasional traffic impacts as work moves forward.
What’s next
Additional sections of the I-80 project are expected to open over the coming months as crews continue work on bridges, interchanges, and expanded roadway capacity.
The bottom line
After years of construction, drivers are finally seeing the first major improvements on I-80—but much more is still to come.
