🏥 Lurie Children’s Advances Plan for New Hospital in Downers Grove
Driving the news: Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital is moving forward with plans to build a second location in Downers Grove, expanding pediatric care in the western suburbs.
Details:
The proposed project includes a 210,000-square-foot hospital and a 60,000-square-foot outpatient center.
Plans call for 50 inpatient beds, an emergency department, and a helicopter pad.
The site sits within the 100-acre Esplanade at Locust Point development near I-355 and Butterfield Road.
The hospital will be funded through existing cash, donations, and bonds — not taxpayer dollars.
Why it matters: The western suburbs currently lack a dedicated pediatric hospital. This project could bring specialized care closer to families, reducing travel times and improving access for common childhood illnesses and emergencies.
The big picture: Lurie’s expansion reflects growing demand for pediatric services outside downtown Chicago, especially for lower-acuity care like respiratory infections, dehydration, and other common conditions.
Between the lines: The facility won’t handle highly complex cases like cancer or organ transplants, but it’s designed to ease pressure on the main Chicago campus while serving a broader suburban population.
What’s next: Lurie still needs to submit detailed site plans and secure state approval before construction can begin.
