Naperville’s Edward Hospital is expanding to meet growing demand. The hospital just got approval for a multi-million-dollar upgrade that will add operating rooms and ICU capacity, aimed at improving access to heart care as the population ages. 🏥

🏥 Edward Hospital Plans $29M Expansion of Heart Services in Naperville
Driving the news: Endeavor Health’s Edward Hospital is investing nearly $29 million to expand its cardiovascular services, aiming to meet rising demand in the western suburbs.
Details:
The project will add 2 new operating rooms and relocate 2 others, bringing the total to 22 ORs.
A new 10-bed intensive care unit will also be built.
The expansion will take place within the Edward Heart Hospital tower on the Naperville campus.
Completion is targeted for late 2027.
Why it matters: With an aging population and growing demand for heart-related procedures, the expansion could reduce wait times and keep more patients receiving care closer to home instead of traveling to Chicago hospitals.
The big picture: Even after opening a dedicated cardiac outpatient center, Edward Hospital says inpatient demand remains high, especially for more complex procedures that require longer operating times and ICU care.
Between the lines: The hospital’s ICUs have operated above 70% capacity for years—well above the state’s 60% benchmark—highlighting the need for more critical care space.
What’s next: With state approval secured, the hospital will move forward with construction and staffing efforts, including recruiting specialized physicians in a field already facing shortages.
