News
š Amazon Just Announced a Massive Store in Chicagoland
Driving the news: Amazon is taking its biggest swing yet at brick-and-mortar retail with a 230,000-square-foot store planned for Orland Park, aiming to blend groceries, essentials, and general merchandise under one roof.
Details:
The store will open in 2027 at 159th Street and LaGrange Avenue, near Walmart, Target, and Costco.
The site spans 35 acres and includes 800 parking spaces and 500 new jobs.
Roughly half the store will be for in-person shopping, while the rest will serve same-day pickup and delivery orders.
Amazon will add traffic mitigation measures and build multiple turn lanes to address local concerns.
Why it matters: With roughly 80% of retail still happening in physical stores, Amazon is looking to grow beyond its 3% grocery market share. The Orland Park location offers high visibility, strong foot traffic, and a chance to compete head-on with retail giants like Walmart.
The big picture: Amazonās e-commerce dominance hasnāt translated to grocery or in-person retail. Its previous physical store concepts (like Amazon 4-star and Amazon Style) fell flat. This new store borrows heavily from Walmartās supercenter model, with a tech-driven twist.
Between the lines: Orland Parkās fast approval and refusal to offer tax incentives shows confidence in the storeās potential. The city required the space to be used for retailānot fulfillmentāgiving Amazon less room to pivot if it doesnāt succeed.
The bottom line: Amazonās latest retail move is a full-on attempt to compete in physical retailās most profitable lane. Whether shoppers switch remains the real test.
