đ§ $400M WaterLink Pipeline Moves Forward Across Western Suburbs
Driving the news
Construction is moving forward on the nearly $400 million WaterLink project, a roughly 30-mile pipeline that will eventually bring Lake Michigan water to Montgomery, Oswego, and Yorkville.
Details
The pipeline will run through multiple communities, including Naperville, Oswego, Montgomery, and Yorkville.
Some sections will use pipes measuring up to 54 inches in diameter, with major crossings involving highways, railroads, utilities, and the Fox River.
About 11 miles of the route will travel through existing ComEd rights of way.
Crews are currently working along Book Road and near 95th Street and Wolfâs Crossing Road in Naperville.
The overall project is scheduled for completion in 2028.
Why it matters
Montgomery, Oswego, and Yorkville are growing, but their current underground water source faces long-term pressure.
Connecting these communities to Lake Michigan water will provide a more dependable supply for residents, schools, and businesses while supporting future growth across the area.
The big picture
The communities currently rely on the Ironton-Galesville deep sandstone aquifer, which the Illinois State Water Survey says is being used at roughly twice its natural replenishment rate.
Water officials have warned that some wells could face challenges much sooner than previously expected.
Whatâs next
Construction will continue along the pipeline route over the next two years.
Once the system is complete, Montgomery, Oswego, and Yorkville will transition to Lake Michigan water while keeping existing wells available for emergency backup.
