🇺🇸 Naperville to Honor 9/11 Victims at Cmdr. Dan Shanower Memorial

Driving the news: Naperville will host its annual Sept. 11 remembrance event at the Cmdr. Dan Shanower Memorial on Thursday, Sept. 11, marking the 24th anniversary of the terrorist attacks and the 22nd year of the memorial. The event pays tribute to Naval Cmdr. Dan Shanower, a Naperville native who died at the Pentagon, as well as all victims of 9/11.

Details:

  • Location: Riverwalk behind Naperville Municipal Center, 400 S. Eagle St.

  • Time: Naperville Municipal Band begins at 5:45 PM, with the remembrance ceremony starting at 6 PM.

  • Guest speaker: Laura Murphy, a survivor of the World Trade Center attack, will share her firsthand account of descending 59 floors after Flight 11 struck the North Tower.

  • Remarks will also be given by Mayor Scott A. Wehrli, Police Chief Jason Arres, and Deputy Fire Chief Philip Giannattasio.

  • In case of inclement weather, the event will move indoors to the Municipal Center City Council Chambers.

Why it matters: The memorial, dedicated in 2003, was among the first in the nation and features a sculpture incorporating a beam from the World Trade Center, fragments from the Pentagon, and granite from Pennsylvania near Flight 93’s crash site. A wall of faces represents all 9/11 casualties, offering a space for reflection and education.

The big picture: Hosted in partnership with Naperville Responds for Veterans, the event provides an opportunity for the community to honor heroes, remember history, and educate younger generations about the profound impact of 9/11.

The bottom line: The Cmdr. Dan Shanower Memorial ceremony allows Naperville residents to come together, reflect on the past, and pay tribute to the courage, sacrifice, and resilience that define the memory of September 11, 2001.
